I am having trouble with my new Wii? Please help!?

HI! I recently got a Wii, and it is installed and connected and everything. I inserted a disc to play, and the menu screen came up (with Wii Sports, Mii, Photo channel etc) but I cannot select anything because even though I am pointing my controller at the screen and waving it around, the cursor does not show up. What is wrong? Please help, thank you!
